Just In Case You Weren't Aware...

I am 17 years old.

I am not an adult.

I have no idea what I want to do for the next 68 years I'm projected to live.

You have no right to condemn me for that. Chances are, you didn't know either when you were my age.

So the next time you ask me what I'm going to major in, and I tell you that I honestly don't know yet, I would appreciate it if you didn't look at me like I was an unmotivated waste of breath.

I have dreams.

I have goals.

I have vision.

I have passion.

And one day, when I am living a full, wonderful life, you'll see that you had no right to treat me the way you are treating me now.

Just in case you weren't aware, I am more than a major. I have the right to experiment, to look around, to change my major as I transform, and to live my life without your judgment.

  2. So much truth here. Don't let anyone make you feel bad for not having a major chosen-when I was in college, every semester I considered changing my major. I picked a new major, looked into everything, and ultimately decided to stick with what I had. Every semester. And now I'm graduated, working retail, and looking into going to school for something else. Maybe there's the rare person out there who knows as a teenager the exact path they'd like their life to take, but I'd say the bulk of us need some time to experiment and try out different things before we settle on what works for us.

  3. What was my major? English- then religion - then English - then English and psychology - then psychology - then religion - the religion and international studies - then religion and European studies - then religion and history - then religion with a minor in history (one class shy of a double major - decided it wasn't worth it to take an extra class while I was studying abroad). It's only important to know your major (or at least the area) if it's not liberal arts or if it is something for which the reputation of the school makes a big difference (like, say, pre-med). You don't want to have to transfer if you decide to do something completely different than what you school offers. So if you want to major in, oh, the study ladybug's reproductive systems, look at schools that offer that. Otherwise, you've got plenty of options...and room and time to ponder the possibilities! :)

  4. i think it is ridiculous to expect teenagers to know what they want to do when there is so much they haven't been exposed to. i ended up dropping out of university to have my daughter and i'm so glad i did! otherwise i would have been thousands of dollars in debt for something that isn't my passion.

enjoy these years of learning and exploration. good luck!

  5. Amen! I changed my mind about a thousand different times, and probably will a thousand more times. The key is to keep listening, be faithful to the crazy places that your calling and vocation will take you, strap on your seatbelt and ride!

P.S. Thanks for finding your way over to my blog =) I hope to see more of you!

  6. Awesome! For the record, I majored in English, which basically means that I can read a book at an alarming rate in between bathing kids and changing diapers. I've always found it ridiculous that young people are expected to plan their life course when they're 17. Seriously....

I value my degree, and now that God will use that knowledge to lead people to Him somehow, but for now, I'm a really smart mom. :)
